Ninth-ranked Fresno State ran away with the Western Athletic Conference Wrestling Championships Saturday.
The Bulldogs tallied 106 1/2 points, followed by BYU with 66, Wyoming 50, Air Force Academy 451/2, Drake 321/4 and New Mexico 31/2. FSU placed eight wrestlers in the championship round and won titles at 126, 134, 142, 158 and heavyweight.The meet's outstanding wrestler was Scott Gonyo of Drake, who decisioned Robbie Sordi, Fresno St., 6-0, the top seed at 118. Fresno State's Dennis DeLiddo was named the WAC Coach of the Year.
Gerry Abas of Fresno State, the nation's number-one ranked wrestler at 142 pounds, went undefeated in three matches. His closest match was in the championship where he defeated BYU's third-seeded Curtis Taylor, 13-7.
BYU's highlights came with third-seeded Phil Armstrong upsetting Russian Serge Mezheritsky, 6-4, at 150 pounds. Mezheritsky was ranked eighth nationally. And second-seeded Albert Olsen upset top-seeded John Harrison of AFA, 12-7 in overtime. Olsen was down 5-2, then had a takedown and a near fall to take a 7-5 advantage before Harrison tied it with a reversal. The Cougars placed five grapplers in the championship round.
AFA's top-seeded Brett Machovina was upset at 167 pounds by Pete Szymczak of Wyoming for one of the two championships won by the Cowboys.
Upsets earlier in the day included BYU's top-seeded Scott Eastmond at 126, third-seeded Pete Szymczak of Wyoming beating second-seeded Anthony Camacho of FSU at 167, and fourth-seeded Jeromy McKean of FSU decisioning top-seed Bill Yarbrough of New Mexico in overtime at 177.
