Officials with the Missionary Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Friday that LDS missionaries in South Africa have been asked to remain in their apartments for an undetermined amount of time. The instructions took effect Monday.

South Africa has been experiencing unrest since the killing of black leader Chris Hani by a white gunman April 10. At least seven people were killed Wednesday as protesters looted and rioted during demonstrations honoring Hani, whose funeral is scheduled for Monday. President F.W. DeKlerk said he would increase security by adding 3,000 officers to South Africa's police force.The ANC labor and Communist alliance has said that demonstrations will continue throughout May to speed up negotiations with the white-rule government for more equal representation.
