Tired of tightening constraints altering his plans and forcing him to unload high-priced players, Joe McIlvaine resigned as general manager of the San Diego Padres.

McIlvaine, long opposed to the club's budget-slashing campaign, was replaced Wednesday by Randy Smith, who at 30 becomes the youngest general manager in major league history.Smith was the Padres' scouting director before leaving to become assistant general manager of the Colorado Rockies. Terms of his five-year contract weren't disclosed.
