British rock star Sting said Wednesday he regretted taking cocaine during his days with the band the Police and confessed to behaving like a "total monster" who got involved in fistfights almost every night.

In an interview with the style magazine "Q" to be published this week, Sting said: "We went through our cocaine stage which was totally stupid. It's the most mindless, pathetic drug."He added: "It's God's way of telling you you've got too much money."

Sting said he and fellow Police members Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland had frequent fights before the group broke up 10 years ago.

"We were having punch-ups virtually every night," he said. "I got a cracked rib after a particularly heated disagreement with Stewart," he said.

He also confessed to being a "total monster . . . competitive, arrogant and aggressive."
