Roy Tarpley returned to the NBA and Jamal Mashburn returned to Rupp Arena on Saturday night, but the Dallas Mavericks lost 121-103 to the Chicago Bulls in an exhibition game.

Mashburn scored 30 points for Dallas in the building where he starred for Kentucky, and Tarpley had 5 points, 5 rebounds and a block in 14 minutes in his first game for the Mavericks since he was banned for drugs in October of

1991.Jason Kidd, the Mavericks' first-round draft pick and the second choice overall, had seven assists but missed 3 of 4 free throws and scored 3 points.

Scottie Pippen had 17 points for the Bulls, nine during a 15-6 run early in the third quarter that gave Chicago a 75-60 lead with 8:31 remaining.

Knicks 108, Spurs 88

In Nashville, Tenn., Derek Harper scored 17 points and John Starks added 14 as the Knicks' backcourt combined to lead New York to victory.

Charlie Ward, the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner and the 26th pick in last June's NBA draft, scored 9 points in the last 7:49 of the game. He hit two 3-pointers while backing up Harper.

Sean Elliott scored 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field to lead the Spurs.

Heat 126, Celtics 108

At West Palm Beach, Fla., ex-Celtic Kevin Gamble and rookie guard Khalid Reeves scored eight points each during a 35-19 second-quarter surge to lead the Miami Heat to a victory over Boston.

Dominique Wilkins, signed by Boston as a free agent, had 14 first-half points on his way to a team-high 17.

Gamble, a free-agent acquisition in the offseason, finished with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field. Reeves, Miami's first-round draft pick from Arizona, finished with 10 points and eight assists.

Suns 142, Pistons 121

At Oklahoma City, Charles Barkley put together his second strong outing in a row, scoring 26 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in leading Phoenix to an exhibition victory over Detroit.

Barkley, who scored 24 points in a victory over Denver on Thursday, played just 24 minutes against the Pistons. He hit 9-of-14 shots from the field and showed no signs of the back problems that caused him to consider retirement last season.

Danny Manning scored 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting. Wayman Tisdale, who played his college ball at Oklahoma, returned to his home state and scored 14 points with 10 rebounds.

Rookie Grant Hill had 14 for Detroit.

Clippers 106, Atlanta 84

At Atlanta, Terry Dehere scored 18 of his game-high 27 points in the second quarter as the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Atlanta Hawks.

Pacers 103, Bucks 98

At Indianapolis, Reggie Miller scored 22 points, including 12 in the third quarter, as the Indiana Pacers defeated the Milwaukee Bucks.

Johnny Newman led the Bucks with 22 points. Milwaukee is without top draft pick Glenn Robinson, who remains unsigned.
