Henry Kissinger might use his diplomatic skills to negotiate a pardon for a dog sentenced to die for chasing mail carriers.

"Restore the dog to the owner and tell the mailman to take a different route," Kissinger said in an appearance on the TV show, "American Journal."Smokey, a 5-year-old Labrador retriever, was sentenced to death by lethal injection. His owner, who was convicted of harboring a vicious animal, has appealed.

Kissinger, who owns a Lab named Amelia, said he's thinking about asking Virginia Gov. George Allen to grant the dog clemency.

Kissinger's shuttle diplomacy may not be necessary. Prosecutors plan to ask the judge to drop the charge against Smokey's owner because the law doesn't adequately define "vicious."
