The first encyclopedia of Utah history was unveiled Friday with a formal presentation to Gov. Mike Leavitt.

Developed as part of the state's 1996 centennial celebration, the Utah History Encyclopedia was written by more than 200 scholars who volunteered their time to the project.Free copies of the encyclopedia will be made available to public and university libraries through a grant from the Utah Statehood Centennial Commission.

The encyclopedia was published by the University of Utah Press and features information about the people, organizations, locations, institutions and topics important to Utah history, said press spokesman Max Keele.
