Wholesale unleaded gasoline prices finished slightly higher Friday after spending most of the day in negative territory on news that more U.S. areas might drop requirements for reformulated gasoline.

Gasoline prices fell nearly half a cent before rebounding to settle up 0.03 cent at 51.55 cents for January delivery. More distant delivery contracts finished lower on the day.Next-month gasoline delivery prices finished the week 1.14 cents lower on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Some counties in upstate New York are considering dropping out of the reformulated gasoline program. Word of their plans pushed prices lower overnight in off-hours dealings.

Home heating oil prices fell Friday and finished lower from a week ago as expectations of warmer-than-normal temperatures in the Northeast beat the fuel down. January delivery contracts finished at 48.46 cents per gallon, down 0.32 cent Friday and 0.81 cent lower than a week ago.
