Walter James Horton died at home on December 17, 1994.

Born May 8, 1913, in Detroit, Michigan to Mary North and William Edward Horton. Married Priscilla Bonner December 30, 1939. He received a B.S. degree in 1935 from Wayne State University in Detroit, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1942. He taught and did research at Tulane University from 1942 to 1946, continuing at the University of Utah from 1946. From 1963 to 1965 he acted as Chairman of the Chemistry Department at Haile Sellassie I University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and from 1968-1971 at the University of Ibadan, Ife, Nigeria. Since 1971 he has been a Research Professor of Chemistry at the University of Utah. He was a member of the Americah Chemical Society, Sigma Xi, Alpha Chi Sigma and has many research publications to his credit.Survived by: Two sons, Paul William and Walter Daniel, by two daughters, Sylvia and Christine and by two granddaughters, Rachael Ring and Elizabeth Horton.

A Memorial will be held on Tuesday, December 20, at 3:00 p.m. in the Chemistry Lecture Hall, Eyring Building, University of Utah. Interment will follow at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Department of Chemistry, University of Utah, to be used for books and journals.
