Spencer M. Cowan, died Sunday, February 13, 1994 at Boone Hospital Center. He was president and treasurer for University Press of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
He was born January 4, 1916 in Salt Lake City to Richard Carl Cowan and Eva Hazel Morris Cowan. He married Joyce Peterson on March 22, 1987 in Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. A grocer's son, member of Mines, Mills and Smelters Union. He worked as a geologist in Tooele, Utah before attending Harvard Business School. He was president, treasurer and co-owner of University Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts and co-owner of the Publishers Book Binding, retiring in 1984. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. hew as a member of the Nantucket Historical Association; the Artist Association of Nantucket; the Columbia Art League and the Armchair Theater. He received his bachelor of science from the University of Utah, 1940; his MBA from Harvard Business School, 1946.Survivors: His wife, Joyce Cowan, Columbia; five sons, Spencer Cowan, Jr., Gainesville, Florida; Philip Cowan, Grant Cowan, both Waban, Massachusetts; Gary Cowan, Concord, Massachusetts and George Nimitz, Chicago, Illinois; two daughters, Elisa Fink, Belton, Missouri and Ingred Fink, Kansas City, Missouri; a brother, Keith Cowan, Murrieta, Calif.; two granddaughters and one grandson. Preceded in death by: two brothers.
Funeral services 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 904 Old 63 So., Columbia, Missouri conducted by Bishop Israelsen. Burial: Nantucket Island, Massachusetts under direction of Memorial Funeral Home. Memorial Contributions: The Nantucket Historical Association.
