A new junior high on the border between Kaysville and Layton has a new principal and soon will have an official name, mascot and school colors.
The latest school to be built in the Davis County School District will be called Fairfield Junior High, assuming the school board gives final approval Tuesday. The mascot will be the Fairfield Falcon and the school colors dark blue and silver.
A 16-member community committee made the selections and chose the name because the school is located on Fairfield Road.
The school will house approximately 1,000 students who will be transferred from Central Davis and Kaysville junior high schools.
The school board has appointed longtime English teacher Cristine W. Blanch as principal. She formerly was assistant principal at North Layton Junior High and Bountiful High School.
A second committee of parents, teachers and administrators chose Blanch from a field of 24 applicants.
Blanch has an undergraduate degree from Boston University and master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Utah. She served as assistant principal on the administrative team that helped with the opening of Northridge High School. She has won numerous awards and served on several education committees.
Blanch has announced that she is looking forward to a school with a "strong and creative staff" and wants to create an academic environment that challenges students to think.
