Gov. Mike Leavitt announced his first selection of a female judge Friday, appointing 3rd District Commissioner Sandra N. Peuler to a 3rd District judgeship.

"Ms. Peuler has acquired a reputation among her peers and the citizens she serves for being thoughtful, deliberative, fair and impartial," Leavitt said in a press release. "I have observed those same qualities in her and I am certain she will serve the citizens of Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties well."Peuler graduated from the University of Baltimore Law School, taking a year of classes at the University of Utah. She opened her own office for two years, then worked as a deputy Salt Lake County attorney for two years. Those four years gave her experience in litigating civil and criminal cases.

She has served as a court commissioner for 12 years, conducting civil hearings and trials in the area of family law. Peuler has also presided over preliminary hearings on felony cases and arraignments, conferences and sentences in misdemeanor cases.
