Anthony W. Middleton, M.D., age 88, died November 10, 1995, of causes incident to age.
He was born in Cedar City, Utah, on April 25, 1907, to Dr. George W. and Margaret Palmer Middleton, then was raised in Salt Lake City.He graduated from LDS High School, then the University of Utah. He then obtained an MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania, interned at Cooperstown, New York, then completed a residency in urology at the Mayo Clinic. He practiced urology in Salt Lake City for over 40 years, and taught medical students and nursing students from the University of Utah and BYU.
He served as President of the Salt Lake County Medical Society and was the Medical Staff President of Holy Cross Hospital. Toward the end of a long and distinguished career, he received an Honorary Emeritus Award for Distinguished Service from the University of Utah in 1975, then served as Honorary President of the Utah Medical Association in 1977. He was a member of the AMA as well as the Utah Medical Association, and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
He served a mission for the LDS Church to France, and served the Church in a variety of positions throughout his life. He was a fine amateur musician, playing the cello in chamber music groups and symphonies most of his life. He supported the Utah Symphony since its inception. An avid reader, he served on the Board of the Salt Lake City Library for years.
He married Dolores Lowry on April 6, 1935, in New York City, the marriage later being solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Two sons, Anthony W. Jr., (wife, Carol), and George W. Middleton (wife, Wendy), and 12 grandchildren survive. He was preceded in death by his wife, four brothers and a sister.
A loving, gentle, kindly physician, father and friend, he will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Utah Symphony, 123 West South Temple, S.L.C., Utah 84101, in his name are suggested.
Funeral services Wednesday, November 15, 1995, at 12 Noon, Ensign 3rd Ward Chapel, 9th Avenue and K Street. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Tuesday evening 6-8 p.m., and at the ward Wednesday, 10:45-11:45 a.m. Burial will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
