Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue . . .
No, nobody's getting married. But it is time once again for the onslaught of Christmas specials on TV.You want old? Well, there are TV classics galore.
"A Charlie Brown Christmas" celebrates its 30th anniversary. "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer" is back to pull Santa's sleigh again.
"Frosty the Snowman" returns to melt your heart. "The Grinch" will have his heart enlarged a couple of sizes several different times on cable.
And that old reliable, "It's a Wonderful Life," returns with an exclusive one-time showing on NBC (Saturday, Dec. 16, Ch. 5).
You want something new? Heading that list is a TV movie produced by a local company - "The Christmas Box" (Sunday, Dec. 17, Ch. 2) from the Bonneville Producers Group.
Based on the best-selling book by Richard Paul Evans, it's the story of a family a family that moves in with an elderly woman in order to care for her and ends up learning the true meaning of Christmas. The cast includes Richard Thomas, Annette O'Toole and Maureen O'Hara.
CBS also has another new TV movie titled "A Holiday to Remember" (Dec. 12, Ch. 2), which teams Connie Sellecca and Randy Travis about a recently divorced mother who returns to her childhood town and rediscovers her first love.
Elsewhere, the new offerings include a snowman sequel in "Frosty Returns" (Dec. 1, Ch. 2). And the Muppets team up with Leslie Nielsen, Robert Downey Jr. and Stockard Channing for the children's special "Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree."
And if you want something borrowed, there's no one more heavily borrowed from than Charles Dickens and his "A Christmas Carol."
There are the relatively straight movie adaptations, including 1935's "Scrooge" (Dec. 25, Ch. 14), 1938's "A Christmas Carol" (various dates, TBS and TNT) and 1951's "A Christmas Carol" (Dec. 24, Ch. 14).
On PBS, newsman Robert MacNeil hosts "Bah! Humbug!" (various dates, Ch. 7 and Ch. 11), taken straight from Dickens' novel.
For something a little further out there, there's Bill Murray in "Scrooged" (various dates, USA).
If you want to see Dickens in animation - in a number of different forms - there's "Mr. Magoo's Christmas" (Nov. 24, Ch. 14), "A Flintstones Christmas Carol" (Dec. 3, Ch. 14 and various dates, TBS) and "The Stingiest Man in Town" (various dates, Disney).
And for gender reversal, Lifetime premieres "Ebbie" (various dates), a new TV movie that casts soap-opera queen Susan Lucci as a female Ebenezer Scrooge.
Oh, and if you want something blue, there's "Blue Toes the Christmas Elf" (Sunday, Nov. 26, Ch. 14).
