In what was almost unthinkable a few years ago, Americans won men's and women's World Cup downhills on the same day Saturday.
Kyle Rasmussen completed a downhill double for the U.S. ski team, winning on Kvitfjell's Olympic course after Picabo Street captured the women's event at Lenzerheide, Switzerland.Enter the controversy.
Pietro Vitalini of Italy won the morning downhill - the makeup for a race declared no contest last week in Aspen, Colo.
Only 37 of the 74 starters completed the course before poor visibility forced organizers to stop the race. But the race jury later declared Vitalini as the winner. Then the U.S. team filed a protest.
The morning race, originally scheduled for Aspen last weekend, was scrapped because of heavy snow after 31 of 68 racers.
The U.S.'s AJ Kitt was declared as the winner. But the ISF overturned the decision.
"If the race in Norway stands, then AJ Kitt should get his rightful win back for Aspen, even if it means counting both the original Aspen race and the makeup,' said U.S. alpine director Paul Major.
