Former Brigham Young University football standout Kyle Morrell is accused of assaulting his ex-wife and a male friend during an alleged altercation at her Layton home.
Morrell, 31, was charged in Layton Circuit Court last month with domestic violence assault and assault, both class B misdemeanors, and with disorderly conduct, a class C misdemeanor. He also was ordered to refrain from contacting his former wife, Lori Lee, and to complete an anger management class after Lee sought a protective order in 2nd District Court in Farmington.
Morrell, whose address is listed in court records as Provo, could not be reached for comment.
In her petition for a protective order, Lee said Morrell returned their 3-year-old daughter to her home on March 19, followed the girl into the house and twice punched Mitch Hemsley in the face.
Lee said she called 911 and followed Morrell outside to his car to stop him from leaving before police arrived. She said he shoved her to the ground and drove off.
The misdemeanor criminal charges, filed March 21, stem from that incident and name Lee and Hemsley as victims, court records show. Morrell was issued a summons and was arraigned on April 5 before Judge Alfred Van Wagenen.
Morrell pleaded not guilty to the charges, and a pretrial hearing is scheduled for May 24, records show.
Lee filed a request for a temporary protective order on March 23, which was granted, and a hearing was held Friday on a permanent, or 120-day, protective order.
In her requests, Lee said Morrell has previously knocked her unconscious, broken her finger, pushed, hit, kicked and verbally abused her.
Judge Glen R. Dawson approved the protective order, which prohibits Morrell from threatening, abusing or telephoning Lee and from entering her home or her parents' home. He also ordered Morrell to complete an anger management class.
Court records show Lee and Morrell married in April 1987 and divorced last year, after Lee filed on the grounds of irreconcilable differences.
Morrell, a former Viewmont High star in Bountiful, played football at BYU from 1981-85. He was selected to the All-WAC team his senior year as a defensive back.
