The uniform that Babe Ruth wore is now in police custody. So is a onetime pitcher who's been charged with stealing it.

The police said the suspect, William Wilson III, 39, stole the uniform from a sports memorabilia collector, Mark Lassman, who had packed it in the trunk of his unattended Mercury Sable rental.A day or two later, detectives said, Wilson tried to use a go-between to sell back the uniform. The man the police identified as the go-between, Rodney Medley, was charged with grand larceny.

The police said they set up an undercover operation to meet Medley and lead them to Wilson. Detectives said they found the uniform in Wilson's apartment.
