For the third straight year, the Utah Opera and Utah Festival Opera companies will hold combined auditions for area singers. They will take place Monday, Oct. 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Capitol Theatre stage.
Each company is auditioning for different purposes. Utah Opera is looking for talented singers to perform in its Opera-in-the-Schools program and community concerts, to participate in its Utah Opera Ensemble (a 10-month training program for aspiring professional singers) and to appear in comprimario roles in its main stage productions. These are not chorus auditions.Operas scheduled for the company's 1997-98 season include Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor," Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette," Monteverdi's "The Coronation of Poppea" and Verdi's "La Traviata."
Utah Festival Opera is seeking singers for its Young Artist Program as well as for leading roles in its upcoming summer season. The 1997 repertoire includes Puccini's "Tosca," Lehar's "The Merry Widow" and Frank Loesser's "Greenwillow."
Interested singers should call Utah Opera music administrator John Wehrle (321-4605) to schedule an audition, with slots to be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. An accompanist will be provided, or candidates may bring their own.
