John W. Gallivan, publisher emeritus of the Salt Lake Tribune, was honored as the Utah Manufacturers Association executive of the year during the group's annual awards and installation banquet Saturday night in Little America.

UMA Chairman Steve Lawson praised Gallivan for his accomplishments in the community and the business world. The UMA award is given annually to business executives for outstanding contributions to the community and the Utah economy."Jack has played a key role in the industrial development in Utah," said Lawson. He has been in the center of such issues as the original building and remodeling of the Salt Palace, tax reform, urban renewal, airport expansion and liquor-by-the-drink.

Gallivan has been chairman of the board of the Kearns-Tribune Corp. since 1984, has been president of Silver King Mining co. since 1960 and was the co-founder and is a director of TCI, the country's largest multisystem cable television owner.

His career with the newspaper includes being publisher from 1960 to 1984 and for the same time was president of the Newspaper Agency Corp., the company that handles advertising, circulation and production for the Deseret News and the Tribune.

He was instrumental in organizing a bid for the Winter Olympics in Utah in 1965 and used his newspaper to heavily promote the Winter Olympics for 30 years. The plaza on 200 South between Main and State was named after him.
