Registration for the St. George Marathon opened in April, and by May 24, 3,100 had signed up for a place on the world-famous run.

Registrar Carlene Baron said the cap for the Oct. 5, 1996 event will be 4,000 runners. The first 3,800 entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. After that, all entries will be held two weeks, then 200 numbers will be randomly selected by lottery to fill the final 200 places.Entries received after the lottery drawing will be returned to the sender unopened, Barons said.

Interested runners are urged to get their race applications in as soon as possible.

Baron said runners have registered from Sweden, Japan, Korea and England, with many entries from Canada and Hawaii.

"Last year Runners World Magazine ran a `before and after' story on the St. George Marathon. Since then the response from around the world has been phenomenal. Our marathon has been listed as one of the 10 most scenic marathons in the world and the marathon with the fastest `fall' for the runners," she said.

Kent Perkins, leisure services director, and his staff begin planning the marathon for the next year the day after the current marathon finishes. "It didn't used to be this way, but the marathon has grown and grown," said Baron.
