MASON ARRESTED: Former Knicks forward Anthony Mason, traded this month to the Charlotte Hornets for Larry Johnson, was arrested as police broke up a disorderly dispute on a Manhattan street corner.

Mason, 29, was held on charges of assault, menacing, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

The incident, at 2:40 a.m. in Times Square, began as a "verbal dispute with a few unidentified people," police spokeswoman Sarah Carpenter said. She said Mason became "disruptive and disorderly" when police tried to break it up, slightly injuring three officers.

KNICKS-RAPTORS TRADE: The Knicks traded shooting guard Hubert Davis to the Raptors for a first-round draft pick New York originally sent to Dallas to acquire Derek Harper in Jan. 1994. The Mavericks sent the pick to Toronto.

Davis, a 1992 first-round pick from North Carolina, became expendable when the Knicks signed free agent Allan Houston on June 14. He had the NBA's third-best 3-point shooting percentage last season, 47.6, going 127-for-267, but averaged only 10.7 points.

NETS SIGN PACK: Robert Pack, the talented point guard who has missed chunks of the last two seasons with knee injuries, agreed with the New Jersey Nets on a multi-year contract.

Pack averaged 18.1 points, 7.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds with Washington before a freak accident sidelined him 31 games. He bumped knees with one of the coaches and a nerve went to sleep and didn't recover until late in the season. He had spent the previous three seasons with Denver, the final one cut short when he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

PACERS INK DRAFTEE: The Indianapolis Pacers signed first-round draft pick Erick Dampier to a three-year contract, leaving guard Reggie Miller as the team's only unsigned free agent.

Dampier, 6-11, 265 pounds, averaged 13.2 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks in three seasons at Mississippi State.

LAKERS SIGN BRYANT: Kobe Bryant, the 17-year-old guard who skipped college to play in the NBA, signed a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers worth about $3.5 million.

The Lakers acquired the 6-foot-6 Bryant, the 13th pick in the draft by Charlotte, for center Vlade Divac. Bryant averaged 30.8 points, 12 rebounds and 6.5 assists as a high school senior at Lower Merion (Pa.) HS.

NASH SIGNS WITH SUNS: Steve Nash, the Phoenix Suns' top draft choice and potential successor to Kevin Johnson at point guard, signed a three-year contract worth about $3.1 million.

Nash, the 15th selection in last month's draft, is a two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year who averaged 17 points and six assists per game for Santa Clara last season.

Nash is Santa Clara's career leader in assists (510) and free-throw percentage (.861), and ranks third in school history with 1,689 points.

HORNETS SIGN DELK: Former Kentucky guard and Final Four MVP Tony Delk, the 16th pick in the NBA Draft, signed a three-year contract with the Charlotte Hornets. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard averaged 17.8 points and shot 49.4 percent for the national champion Wildcats.
