Steffi Graf spent two weeks telling anyone and everyone that records didn't mean a thing to her. Suddenly, after receiving the big silver plate yet again, the magnitude of her accomplishments suddenly hit her.

Seven Wimbledon titles. Twenty Grand Slam tournament crowns. One hundred career titles."It didn't catch me until I went to the locker room, about the 100th title, winning seven Wimbledons," Graf said after her 6-3, 7-5 victory over Arantxa Sanchez Vicario on Saturday. "It is something I've never imagined I would be able to do and be capable of doing. You can't really put in into words."

So, instead of Graf dismissing the numbers on championship weekend, it was Martina Navratilova who was playing down records. Navratilova, who has a record nine singles title, lost a mixed doubles match with partner Jonathan Stark and missed a chance to tie Billie Jean King's record of 20 total Wimbledon crowns.

Navratilova, who said she hasn't decided whether she'll play next year, insisted the record means nothing to her.

"If it did, I would be playing (women's) doubles also," Navratilova said. "I would probably have a better shot of it in women's doubles than mixed doubles because I believe there are many more mixed doubles teams capable of winning the title than women's doubles teams."

Navratilova's chilly relationship with Graf grew frostier during this Wimbledon. So when asked to give her opinion of Graf's place in history, Navratilova played it straight with a less-than-enthusiastic endorsement.

"I'm not a soothsayer, so I never will say what will happen, but obviously she's one of the all-time greats," Navratilova said. "People have asked me what I think where I fit in and I just say I know I'm in that group and she is certainly in that group, as is Monica Seles and Chris Evert and a few others. But to say anything else beyond that is very subjective."

Here's a pretty scary thought for any player on the women's tour: Graf won this Wimbledon with a suspect knee, a bad cold, her father in jail and without much practice. She also says she has no thoughts of retiring anytime soon.

How far can she go? Not only is Navratilova's record in jeopardy, but also Margaret Court Smith's record of 24 Grand Slam tournament titles.
