MEN'S GOLF: The BYU men's golf team will travel to New Mexico to begin the 1996-97 season by playing in the 42nd annual William H. Tucker Invitational this week.

The tournament, hosted by the University of New Mexico, begins on Thursday and concludes with the final round on Saturday.

The tournament will put BYU to the test early this year as the Cougars go up against some of the nation's top teams, including defending NCAA champion Arizona State and defending Tucker Invitational champion UNLV. Also set to participate are Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Houston, New Mexico State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Southern Methodist, Texas, TCU, Tulsa, UC Irvine, USC and UTEP.

Utah

WOMEN'S SOCCER: The University of Utah women's soccer team nipped Weber State Tuesday afternoon, taking the in-state rivalry game by the score of 3-1.

Utah started the scoring with a goal by Dominique Barcellona at 13:45 of the first half. Utah scored again at the 30:54 mark of the first period when Staci Burt beat a WSU defender one-on-one for the goal. Burt had a goal and two assists on the day.

With just under five minutes gone in the second half, Utah scored again to take a 3-0 lead. This time it was Jacki Doman taking a pass from Burt and connecting from the left angle. Weber scored its only goal at the 15-minute mark when Lisa Anthony kicked in a loose ball in front of the Utes net.

MEN'S GOLF: John Owen was the top Ute finisher in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Golf Tournament held Monday and Tuesday in Fort Collins, Colo.

Owen, a junior for the Utes this season, shot a three-round total of 220 to finish in 15th place in the tournament. Colorado State's Mark Batchelor took medalist honors as he finished four under par with a score of 209.

The Utes shot a combined score of 915 to finish in 13th place. Colorado State won the team title with a three-round total of 860.

Other Ute individual scores included: Chris Riding and Chad Pettingill, 230; Jon Morgan, 237; and Kevin Mansell, 246.

Utah State

MEN'S GOLF: The Utah State men's golf team opened its 1996 fall season at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate, with the defending champion Aggies finishing in seventh place at 897.

Senior Justin Burt led USU, tying for 11th at 218. Next for the Aggies was junior Todd Tanner (225), sophomores Casey Beck and Chris Moody (230) and junior Mitch Harris (231).

The Aggies return to action on Sept. 22-23 when they travel to a San Diego State tournament.

Weber State

WOMEN'S GOLF: Weber State women's golf team finished in 10th place Tuesday with a team total of 965 at the Ram/Cowgirl Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo.

The 54-hole tournament was played at the 6000-yard, par-71 Southridge Golf Course. Texas Christian took team honors with a total of 895, 27 strokes ahead of second place Pepperdine at 922.

Susan Horton and Angela Stanford of TCU finished 1-2 in the medalist race with 216 and 220, respectively. Weber State's Aimee Aardema was the low finisher for the Wildcats scoring a 233 for a tie at 12th place.

The Wildcats will participate in the BYU Invitational on Sep. 16-17 at the Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville.
