Kelvin Yazzie, native Navajo artist, is doing a short residency at Grantsville Middle School through Friday where he is encouraging, instructing and strengthening emerging talents of eighth-grade art students. Yazzie is exposing the students enrolled in Natalie Johnson's art classes to his medium: clay and the process of creating ceramic pottery. Students are being instructed on the history of ceramic pottery, art form and function basics and hands-on training while working with a pottery wheel. On Thursday, the students will exhibit their work at 7 p.m. in the Grantsville Middle School Media Center. The public is invited. - Art Access Gallery celebrates its fifth anniversary with "The Reunion Exhibition," featuring 35 artists who are representative of its philosophy and offerings since the first exhibition in the fall of 1991. A reception for the artists is Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. During the occasion, Art Access/Very Special Arts Utah will also introduce "Won-derfully Worth Doing," a 64-page soft-covered book written by Frank McEntire, art critic for the Salt Lake Tribune. The book will feature the work of 22 artists who have shown their work at the Art Access Gallery over the years.- Clyde Ross Morgan, a Utah sculptor now living in Sedona, Ariz., has been commissioned by the Tucson Mormon Battalion Monu-ment Foundation to design and sculpt a work commemorating the Mormon Battlion's contribution to the city of Tucson. Morgan, known for his historically accurate bronzes, has selected three figures for the composition: Capt. Jefferson Hunt, Private Christopher Layton and Teodoro Ramirez, a respected Tucson Presidio merchant. The monument will measure 16 feet from top to bottom and will be placed in El Presidio, downtown Tucson, on Dec. 14.
