Dr. David Jack Green, former medical director of the Utah State Developmental Center, pediatrician and medical ethicist, died of a heart attack Jan. 26. He was 51.

Dr. Green was known as an advocate for children, and he served them throughout his medical career.He got his undergraduate degree from BYU, then graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine. Following a pediatric residency in the Air Force, he returned to Utah, where for 18 years he worked with developmentally disabled people at the Utah State Developmental Center. He served there as medical director for 17 years before joining the staff at the University of Utah Hospital full time last July.

At the University Hospital, Dr. Green served as associate professor of pediatrics, as medical director of adolescent medicine and as a member of the Division of Medical Ethics. At the time of his death he was chairman of the ethics committee at the hospital.

He also shared his medical expertise during health clinics for children with special needs and through the Shriners Hospital orthopedics clinics and at Primary Children's Medical Center.

He was born in Salt Lake City June 12, 1945, to Jack H. Green and Barbara Blesigner. Prior to attending medical school, he served an LDS mission to Germany. He is survived by his wife, Debra Wynkoop Green, and several children.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 30, at noon at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple. Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour before the service. Interment will be in Salt Lake City Cemetery.
