A man who asked to be put to death for killing a 69-year-old woman during a gas station robbery was executed by injection.
"I'd like to tell my family I love them and will see them again soon," John Cockrum said Tuesday evening, his prayers then cut short by a gasp as the lethal drugs flowed into his arms. Minutes later, he was dead.Cockrum, 38, was condemned for fatally shooting Eva May at her country convenience store near DeKalb. He shot her in the head and stole $1,200 from her purse, prosecutors said.
A habitual drug user at the time of his arrest, Cockrum said he underwent a religious conversion in prison and since 1990 had asked to be put to death for his crime.
