WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Utes defeated the Oregon Ducks 4-3 Friday in an intense game at Ute Field. Utah led 2-0 at the half, with goals by Staci Burt and Jessica Narajowski. In the second, freshman Lorrie Tipton boosted Utah's lead by making two goals. Oregon fought back, however, scoring three goals in the last 20 minutes of the game.

STUDENT ATHLETE CONFERENCE: The third-annual University of Utah Student Athlete Conference will be Sunday from 5-9:30 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Utah seeks a school-record 12th straight win today at 3 p.m. on its Crimson Court (HPER building) when it meets a Colorado State team ranked No. 20. The match is to be televised live by KJZZ-Ch. 14.

Brigham Young

WOMEN'S TENNIS: The two BYU doubles teams and Eline Chiew finished competition at the ITA Clay Courts in Orlando, Fla., earlier than planned. Both duos lost their matches Friday afternoon, and Chiew was defeated in her singles match.

MEN'S GOLF: Defending champion BYU heads to Oregon Monday to make a run at its third title in four years at the Nike Northwest Classic at the 7100-yard, par-72 Trysting Tree Country Club course near Corvallis.

The Northwest sports what may be the toughest field it has ever had. In addition to 19th-ranked BYU, several Pac-10 squads (host Oregon State, Oregon, Washington, Washington State, UCLA, Stanford and California) are participating in the 22-team field.

CROSS COUNTRY: An elite field that includes teams from BYU's men's and women's squads will compete in the eighth annual Mountain West Cross Country Classic today at Missoula, Mont.

The men's 8K race begins at 10:15 a.m., followed by the women at 11 a.m.

Utah State

CROSS COUNTRY: The Utah State cross country team travels to Missoula, Mont., today to compete in the 8th annual Mountain West Classic. The field includes five of the nation's top 25 teams.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Utah State snapped a three-game losing streak on the road with a 15-9, 15-11, 16-14 victory over North Texas. The Aggies improved to 10-6 on the season and 1-2 in the Big West. Freshman Danae Mohlman led the attack with 11 kills and five blocks.

Weber State

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Weber State recorded its second shutout in a row, beating North Texas 1-0 Friday in Ogden.

Both teams played a scoreless first half, and it remained that way until the 53rd minute when Wildcat sophomore forward Melanie Miller headed a deflected shot past Eagle goalkeeper Amery Chandler. Weber State improves to 10-2 on the season.

GYMNASTICS: The women's team has claimed its second Academic National Championship in the last four years, it has been announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches.

The Thunderbirds, who have finished among the top-three NACGC Scholastic All-American teams in each of the past five years, regained the top spot with a team GPA of 3.585 during the 1996-97 academic year, edging Winona State at 3.555 and George Washington at 3.518.

Salt Lake Community College

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The SLCC team downed the College of Eastern Utah in three straight games Friday, 15-7, 15-0, 15-8. The Bruins, 18-8 overall, remain atop the Scenic West Conference with a 3-0 mark.
