Charlie Johnson has been elected chairman of the Utah State Board of Regents.
Johnson, Gov. Mike Leavitt's former chief of staff, was appointed to the higher education governing body in August.Earlier this summer, Johnson resigned from the governor's staff to join the Garff-Warner dealership chain as vice chairman of the board.
Johnson was Leavitt's chief of staff for four years and served as director of the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget under Gov. Norm Bangerter. He is a certified public accountant and previously a managing partner of the Salt Lake office of KPMG Peat Marwick. He resides in Sandy.
He succeeds Vernal attorney Kenneth Anderton, who served 3 1/2 years as chairman.
Meeting Friday at the University of Utah, regents also re-elected Aileen H. Clyde as vice chairwoman.
Clyde, Springville, was appointed to the Board of Regents in 1989 and was a former trustee for Utah Valley State College. She is a former second counselor in the General Relief Society presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
