Spider, the weirdly named lyricist/vocalist for Boston rock act Powerman 5000, couldn't be a costumed hero, so he's doing the next best thing - he's performing music almost every night.
"(It's) as close as I could get to being an actual superhero," he said. "That's what this is all about for me - it's like being in the Avengers or the Defenders."As for a description of the band's nearly indescribable mix of rock, rap, hip-hop and metal, Spider suggests that music stores and radio stations file it under "action."
Powerman 5000 plays in the Wolf Mountain Arena in Park City on Saturday, March 1, as part of the Airwalk Sno-Core Tour.
The band emerged from Boston's underground music scene in the early '90s with "True Force," an EP or short album recorded over a two-day period for $600. Though "True Force" brought Powerman 5000 attention from major labels, group members have hope of getting even better.
"It wasn't important for us to be on some major label then," Spider said. "What was important was to become the best band we could be. Playing live and writing was our priority."
But after the group's full-length debut, "The Blood Splat Rating System," won local awards and an even more loyal following, the group signed with Dreamworks Records, which released "Mega!! Kung Fu Radio," a remixed and remastered version of "Blood Splat," as well as a few surprises.
"We were all psyched about the record and knew it was time to take it to the next level," said Al, the band's one-named drummer.
The Airwalk Sno-Core Tour, now in its second year, is a major concert tour package that includes music, as well as snow sports. Daytime events will feature exhibitions by professional and amateur snowboarders.
Other acts performing at the Sno-Core stop in Park City include hard-core punks face to face, rappers the Pharcyde and ska-punk act the Voodoo Glow Skulls. The Wolf Mountain show will also include a screening of a "mini-movie" of Sublime, shot before that band's vocalist, Brad Nowell, died last year.
Showtime is set for 7 p.m. Tickets for the Sno-Core Tour are $15 and are available at all Smith'sTix outlets, which also include a service charge. They will also be available at the door.
