Dr. Carlyle Harmon, founder of the Eyring Research Institute and former vice president of Research for Johnson & Johnson, died at his home in Provo, Utah, Monday April 24, 1997.

Born January 17, 1905 to Frank and Sophia Jones Harmon. He graduated with distinction from Stanford University in 1927, receiving a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1930. During his Stanford years he met Delta Arbon, an LDS missionary from Arbon, Idaho. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple March 22, 1929. They had three children, Donna, who lived one day, Norma, and David.Dr. Harmon had a distinguished career in science and research, holding over 39 patents at the time of his retirement. He developed the first and third generations of non-woven fabrics used in gowns, sheets, wipes and napkin covers which replaced the traditional cotton woven fabrics used in hospitals. He also developed and patented the thin highly absorbent diaper products used throughout the world which have been a blessing to mothers of babies and for the elderly.

Dr. Harmon retired to Provo in 1971, where he established the Eyring Research Institute, serving as chairman of the board. Eyring was one of Utah County's first high-tech corporations and was involved with a number of high-tech spinoffs including WordPerfect, Novell and Dynix. Active even in retirement, Dr. Harmon served as a consultant for the Van Lear Corporation in Holland and had the opportunity of working with development laboratories throughout the world.

An active member of the LDS Church, Dr. Harmon held numerous leadership positions including High Priest Group leader, high councilor, and branch president.

His first wife, Delta Arbon Harmon preceded him in death September 15, 1987.

On December 2, 1988, he married Cleo (Humpherys) Carley in the Provo LDS Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Cleo Harmon; a son, David Lynn Harmon of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Mrs. John (Norma) May of Marietta, GA; three grandchildren, Mrs. Donald (Linda) Wagner of Carrollton, GA; Mrs. Paul (Laura) Miller of Douglassville, GA; and John Carlyle May of Marietta, GA; and five great-grandchildren. In addition he has two stepsons, Larry Boyde Taggart of Salt Lake City; and Frank C. Carley of Hyrum, Utah; nine step-grandchildren.

His viewing will be held Thursday evening, March 27th at the Berg Mortuary in Provo from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will convene at the Third Ward, Provo North Stake, 1174 Grand Avenue, Provo, at 11 a.m. Interment, Provo City Cemetery.
