Selected incidents in Utah linked to the Animal Liberation Front and other extremist animal-rights groups:

1992

October - Millville, Cache County: At the USDA Predator Ecology Project field station, 53 coyote pens were cut, 14 animals fled and all but two were later recovered. A building at the station was set on fire, and slogans were spray-painted. Damage was $500,000. The same day, Frederick Knowlton's office on the USU campus was also entered, files were taken and a fire started; $10,000 damage.

1994

October - Holladay: Three windows were smashed at Honey Baked Hams, causing $500 damage; the company also received death threats over the phone.

October - Holladay: Meier's Meat Market found windows smashed and a note left behind that read, "Murderers. Next time it won't be the windows . . . "

October - West Valley City: A pipe bomb was thrown through the front window of Jordan Meat Co., causing $1,500 damage.

1995

Various months - Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake: Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, The Leather Factory, Main Street Poultry, H&D Food Services and Consolidated Field Sports Inc. all had ball bearings and marbles shot through windows.

March - Salt Lake City: Trucks owned by Egg Products Co. were painted with slogans, including "Eggs are Murder."

June - Murray, South Salt Lake: Tandy Leather Co. was firebombed, causing $300,000 damage. The same morning, "Leather is Dead" graffiti and an unexploded Molotov cocktail were found inside The Leather Factory.

June - Salt Lake City: A Molotov cocktail was thrown into Majestic Meats. $3,500 damage.

1996

March - Holladay: Meiers Country Fried Chicken found seven windows smashed.

April - Salt Lake City, Holladay: On "ALF appreciation night," Egg Products Co. had two trucks burned out, as well as their store, which burned to the ground. More than $100,000 damage. The same night, two windows were smashed out at Snider Bros.

May - Salt Lake City: Windows were smashed at L'Ours Blanc fur shop.

June - Sandy: Utah Fur Breeders Agriculture Cooperative was raided, and 75 mink used in nutritional research were freed. Two sheds were half full with mink, and one of them was completely emptied out.

June - Salt Lake City: Locks glued at L'Ours Blanc fur shop.

June - Riverton: 1,000 mink were freed from fur farm. The ALF says it found dead mink lying in cages, under the cages, in piles of feces, with many half eaten by other mink. Slogans read: "More actions are coming. Murderers beware."

July - South Jordan: 3,000 mink were liberated from the Holt Mink Ranch. $35,000 in damages from breeding cards being destroyed.

October - Provo: About 1,100 mink were released from a mink farm and breeding cards were destroyed. Huge holes were cut in two surrounding fences, causing more than $20,000 in damage.

October - Hoytsville, Summit County: About 2,000 mink and 200 foxes were released when someone entered a ranch and freed the animals. Many animals wandered onto nearby I-80 and were run over.

1997

March - Sandy: Close to $1 million in damage resulted from six pipe bombs that went off at the Utah Fur Breeders Agriculture Cooperative. Four of the company's trucks were disabled and administrative offices were targeted.

March - West Haven, Weber County: An attempted firebombing of the Montgomery Fur Co. was thwarted by a security guard who saw two men pour about 25 gallons of gasoline around the base of the building, as well as underneath the guard's truck. The ALF said the mission was aborted because of the guard's presence.
