It may seem a simple thing: Give a road with three names just one.

But changing the name of the stretch of 1200 and 1300 South between the freeway and 800 East to University Parkway isn't so easy. It's taking time and it'll take some money on the part of Orem city.

Orem's City Council voted recently to send a request to the Utah Department of Transportation to have the entire road - which is state-owned - signed and known as University Parkway.

Currently the road becomes University Parkway past the 800 East intersection but is known through Orem as 1300 South except at the far west end as cars exit the freeway to Orem. People leaving the 1200 South exit are immediately on 1300 South and that causes some frustration.

Alan Mecham, director for UDOT Region 3, said UDOT has received the formal request and has no problem with it.

However, Orem is required to pay for the cost of posting new signs, said Mecham.

That could be a lot or a little depending on whether overlays can be used - especially on freeway signs.

"You're looking at as high as $10,000-$12,000 per sign if you have to replace those on the freeway," said Mecham. "The street signs in Orem aren't going to be that expensive."

An overlay would be only $2,500 per sign.

Mecham said he believes the change makes good sense and will clear up a lot of confusion for motorists coming into the area for the first time.

John Park, Orem's assistant city manager, said the city is aware that they will bear the burden of the name change.

A coalition of business owners approached the City Council asking for the change to make it easier for customers to find their shops. They said the change would also give a better identity to the University Mall shopping center, and help eliminate confusion for tourists and people trying to find Brigham Young University.

Mecham said the changes could be made within the next few weeks.
