John David (J.D.) Merrell, 82, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 1997, at the Columbia Brigham City Community Hospital.

He was born on March 2, 1915, in Brigham City, Utah, a son of Charles William and May Reese Merrell. He married Marian Nielsen on June 19, 1941, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. J.D. served with the U.S. Army during World War II with the Signal Corp in Europe. He was a member of the LDS Church and had served a mission to Czechoslovkia.He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and was active in Jaycees. He was a member of the Brigham City Golf and Country Club. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, golf and enjoying his children and grandchildren.

J.D. was president of Merrell's Inc. for man years until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Brigham City; one son and two daughters: John David Merrell, Jr., Willard, Utah; Judy Ann (James) Hartvigeen, Perry, Utah; and Jana Dee (Mike) Chase, Kuna, Idaho; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Paul Reese Merrell, Brigham City, Utah and a sister, Mary (Grant) Valentine, Salt Lake City; preceded in death by a son, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3, 1997, at 12 noon at Petersen Funeral Chapel, 634 East 200 South, in Brigham City. Friends may call on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and one Saturday 10:45 until 11:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery with Military Honors accorded under the direction of the Brigham City VFW Post #1695.
