Eugene Vale, 81, author of the best-selling 1959 novel "The 13th Apostle," and of "The Technique of Screen Play Writing," a 1944 textbook that remained in print for more than 40 years, died May 2 at his home in Los Angeles.

He wrote numerous screenplays, including "The Second Face" (1950), "Francis of Assisi" (1961) and "A Global Affair" (1964). In 1956, "The Dark Wave," a short documentary that he wrote, was nominated for an Academy Award.
