A man convicted of killing his father and eating part of his brain has been sentenced to 62 years in prison, plus time in a mental hospital.
Joseph Garner, 38, was convicted in March, found guilty but mentally ill in the murder of Paul T. Garner on Dec. 26, 1995.On Friday, Marion Superior Court Judge Tanya Walton-Pratt sentenced Garner to the maximum 65 years but suspended three years and ordered him to serve at least 180 days of the suspended term in a mental health facility.
Garner's lawyers had argued that the jury's verdict should be overturned because he was insane and could not be held responsible for his actions.
