Glen Laird Taggart, age 83, died Sunday, August 10, 1997 in Logan, Utah.
He was born Jan. 16, 1914 in Lewiston, Utah the son of James and Valeria Ann Laird Taggart. He married Phyllis Paulsen in 1940 in the Logan LDS Temple. He attended school in Lewiston and graduated from North Cache High School. He received his B.S., in 1940, in Sociology from Utah State A.C. and his Ph.D., in 1946, in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Taggart completed ten years of service with the Dept. of Agriculture as Chief of the Technical Collaboration Division of the department's Foreign Agricultural Service. In 1953 Glen accepted a appointment as professor of Sociology at Michigan State University. Three years later he was then appointed Michigan States first Dean of International Studies and Programs. Under his leadership, Michigan State's program assisted in establishing four new university level institutions abroad and assisted approximately another twenty already established colleges and universities abroad to become more effective educational institutions. In 1964-66, he took a two year leave of absence from MSU to serve as Vice Chancellor (President) of the new University of Nigeria. In 1968, Dr. Taggart came to Utah State University as its eleventh President, a position he held for eleven years. After retirement from USU, President Taggart spent two and a half years with the Dept. of State in the area of international development. From 1982-92 he served as a Senior program Consultant with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. During this time Dr. Taggart also spent four years as a member of the Board of Regents of Higher Education in Utah. As a Kellogg Consultant, he served in a number of capacities, including chairman of a task force to plan and establish an institution of higher education in Costa Rica. Dr. Taggart led the effort from its inception to its completion. The Agricultural College of the Humid Tropical Region in Costa Rica opened it's doors in the fall of 1990.He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Taggart of Logan; son, Edward Louis and Elizabeth Taggart of Logan; a daughter-in-law, Pamela Taggart and David Greenwood, Salt Lake City, grandchildren, Christine and James Harvey, Salt Lake City; William Glen Taggart and Trisha Elaine Taggart, Logan, Nicholas Greenwood, Salt Lake City; Kathyleen and Obinnaya Ahanonu, Phi Hung Huynh, Van Hung Huynh, Logan; a sister, Velma and Wendell Bayles, Topeka, Kansas; a brother, Spencer and Ila Taggart, Logan. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine Taggart and son, Stephen Glen Taggart.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Logan 21st Ward Chapel, 875 North 1500 East. Friends may call at the church Saturday morning from 10:30-11:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
