A hospital says it doesn't allow monkey business in the emergency room - even if it's a matter of life and death.

The monkey's owner brought the pet into the Methodist Hospital South emergency room Sunday after the animal stopped breathing.Nurse Beverly Pressgrove said no one responded when she asked for an "ambu bag," which is used to restore breathing. She and another nurse took the monkey outside the emergency room, stuck a straw in its mouth and tried to revive it. They were unsuccessful.

"In my heart, I just could not see turning away," Pressgrove said.

She should have, said Methodist South administrator Cecilia Wilson-Sawyer.

"We're a full-service hospital for adult humans, not a veterinary hospital," she said. "Any reasonable person would have used a little bit better judgment."

Wilson-Sawyer said Pressgrove will be given an administrative hear-ing after an investigation.

But Pressgrove said Tuesday night that she already had been fired and planned to appeal.
