Utah's ailing football defense took another hit Tuesday afternoon when starting free safety Brandon Dart injured a knee during a red-zone coverage drill.
Dart was scheduled for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) this morning, and coach Ron McBride said he couldn't speculate on the degree of injury. "It wasn't positive," he said. "He's a question mark at this point" for Saturday night's season opening game with Utah State at Rice Stadium. If Dart is out, he would be replaced by redshirt freshman Kimball Christianson and senior Jimmy Nolan.
McBride said Dart lunged for a ball that was caught by a receiver, trying to knock it loose, and twisted his left knee the wrong way and heard a "pop."
Dart's career has been injury filled. The junior from Layton missed the Copper Bowl last December and all of spring practice with a hamstring injury after starting the last 10 games of last season and leading the Utes in solo tackles .
