The Sun tabloid sold more than a million extra copies Monday, according to industry executives, indicating that people have an extraordinary hunger for fresh stories and pictures about Princess Diana, in spite of any anger they feel toward journalists and photographers.

British news agents and distributors said the Sun, along with its stablemate the Times, had printed about 50 percent more copies than its usual Monday output. The Sun and other British mass-market newspapers, such as the Daily Mirror and the Daily Star, had been at the center of bitter public criticism over their use of freelance photographers.

Kshitij Purani, manager of the City Kiosk at Cannon Street subway station in London, said, "According to yesterday's television, I thought people were all angry with the tabloids. But still they buy them."
