Dr. Carlson (Chick) Terry, age 73, peacefully passed away on January 10, 1998, in his home after surrendering gracefully to cancer.

He was born on November 18, 1924 in St. George, Utah to David Marvin and LaMar Timothy Terry of Rockville, Utah, where he grew up roaming beautiful mountains, eating melons, and playing ball. Chick was an exceptional athlete. At 15, he won honors in the statewide High School Pentathlon Games and was placed on the Hurricane High School basketball team as a freshman. In 1984 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Southern Utah University where he broke the National Junior College javelin record as a freshman, was voted the National Junior College Best All-Around Athlete of the year, and was Captain and an All-Intermountain Collegiate Athletic Conference player for two years as a guard on the basketball team.Chick was a bombardier in the US Air Force and taught bombardiering for the Air Force in Texas. He graduated from Northwestern University Dental School in 1952 and practiced dentistry in Parowan, St. George, and Murray, Utah. He was a Charter Member of the Beehive Academy of Dental Practice Administration. Chick was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions of leadership including: South Cottonwood Stake Mission President, High Counselor in Murray, Utah East Stake; and Bishop of the Murray 23rd Ward - which included 105 High Priests. He also served as Scout Master, and as the Young Mens President.

While working at the Grand Canyon, Chick fell in love with his sweetheart, Claire Dale Rowley. They were married in 1947 and celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary last June. Chick loved to garden and won two blue ribbons at the Washington County Fair last fall for his melons and tomatoes.

Chick is survived by his wife, Claire Dale; and their five children, Carla Jo (Daniel) Judd of St. George, UT; Rebecca (Scott) Heal of Salt Lake City, UT; Paul Carlson (Cindy) Terry of Phoenix, AZ; Dr. Kyle Rowley Terry of Delano, CA; and Tena Mar (Guy) Sadler of Brigham City, UT. Chick has 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers, David Lowell Terry of St. George, UT; Marvin Devon Terry of Hurricane, UT; and three sisters, Fae Ahlstrom Jenacaro of Las Vegas, NV; Barbara Bell of Rockville, UT and Jeanette Madsen of St. George, UT. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dorothy McLeod, and brother, Keith.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Spilsbury and Beard Desert Rose Memorial Chapel (110 South Bluff St.) in St. George. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Spilsbury & Beard Mortuary and Wednesday one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Parowan Cemetery at 3:30 p.m.
