The secret of success, according to Sonia Dada's guitarist/founder Dan Pritzker, is quality and diversity.
"We go from album to album and track by track when we approach a project," Pritzker said during a telephone interview from Chicago. "We deal with each song like it's an individual breathing entity. And our goal is to keep writing songs that are better than the last."Sonia Dada - Pritzker, bassist Erik Scott, drummer Hank Guaglianone, guitarist Dave Resnik, keyboardist Chris Cameron and vocalists Michale Scott, Paris Delane and Shawn Christopher - will play the Zephyr Club, 301 S. West Temple, on Tuesday, Dec. 1. Doors open at 7 p.m.
One thing that continues Pritzker's inspiration for writing songs is that Sonia Dada has three vocalists.
"I'm a sucker for some good three-part harmony," he said. "Night after night, it just kills me when they do their thing."
This tour and the band's recent album, "My Secret Life," feature a new dimension with Christopher's vocals. She is the first female vocalist for the band.
"She's got a great texture that enhances the other two," Pritzker said, citing the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington as some of his major musical influences.
"We'd known Shawn for some time. She'd been a backup singer for us on the first two albums. And we were needing a vocalist this time around, so we asked her to join."
Pritzker said he loves songwriting so much that everything else is just an added joy.
"I remember standing on stage in Australia, and the venue was just packed to the rafters," he recalled. "I thought to myself, `Okay, this feels real good,' but it wasn't as good as creating the stuff that got the people there."
The only drawback of the initial songwriting rush is when the idea gets a bit cold after being out for awhile. "Nothing sounds as good as it did when I heard it my head before I put it to paper. But that doesn't mean those things aren't good. If you hear what we're doing, you will know what I mean."
