Shauna Adix, 66, died peacefully at dawn on Monday, Dec. 14, 1998 at home from ovarian cancer. Her husband, Vern and daughter, Alison have preceded her in death, leaving only her son, David; although she freely and genuinely embraced everyone she knew as family. The extension of her magnanimous love leaves a vast network of friends and influence. Her dynamic spirit and generous heart survive.
She was born on June 13, 1932, the second of five children, to Charlotte and Frank McLatchy. Shauna's authority and individualism were apparent from the start. After graduating from the University of Utah, she worked for the telephone company, then went on to earn a master's degree from Ohio University. On returning to Salt Lake she was hired at the "U" as program director for the brand new Student Union Building. She married Vern in 1957. While he was totally involved in summer theatre at the "U", she directed the Brighton MIA Girl's Camp from '59 through '64. As "Wisty" her spiritual leadership was profound. Those were magical summers of fun and purpose.
She was involved with numerous volunteer and paid positions: Mortar Board, HERS/WEST, Jr. League, the Division of Aging Services, her jointly owned advertising firm, "et al". Her greatest work began in 1970 when she became the first director of the newly established Women's Resource Center at the U. Her tremendous vision and skill furthered countless opportunities for women.
Always the intellectual, she earned an Educational Administration Ph.D. in 1976. At different times she taught in the Graduate School of Social Work and for two years chaired the U's Dance Dept. She was strongly involved with Avanta, The Virginia Satir Network, a national group focused on education and community. She also helped create Crones Counsel, an ongoing women's celebratory gathering.
As teacher, healer, mover and groundbreaker, she improved and empowered the lives of many. Those who cherished her touch will keep it with them always.
We plan to celebrate her life on Friday, Dec. 18, at Wasatch Presbyterian Church (17th E. and 17th So.) at 1 p.m. where we invite all who want to share memories of her to speak briefly in an open forum. (Please sit in the front pews if you plan to say something.) In honoring her choice, her body will be cremated.
Should you desire to make a contribution in her behalf, she has established The Shauna Adix Family Trust and a separate education fund called ETC. Of course, her generous nature would bless any gift you choose to make to any cause.
