Chinese political activists have set up an underground opposition party in China to challenge Communist power, a U.S.-based spokesman for the group said on Friday.
The China Democracy and Justice Party was formed last Sunday, Fu Shenqi told Reuters by telephone from New York. He declined to say how many members the party had.A party statement vowed to "protect the rights of citizens, uphold social justice, develop a market economy, guarantee the right of private ownership, end privileges and dictatorship and establish a democratic China."
Fu said the party had established branches in more than five cities and more would be set up.
"Authorities will not be able penetrate the organization because it is underground," he said.
This month, Beijing released from detention and expelled Wang Bingzhang, a U.S.-based dissident who sneaked into China to help set up the party.
