Jaime Escalante, the teacher who turned inner-city teenagers into math whizzes and inspired the 1988 movie "Stand and Deliver," is retiring.

Escalante, 66, has been giving math and life lessons at Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento for seven years. He submitted his resignation Tuesday."It's time to dedicate more time to my family," he said. "And it's time to step aside and give a chance to other teachers."

Before moving to Sacramento, Escalante taught at Garfield High School in Los Angeles, encouraging hundreds of students to enroll in advanced-placement calculus classes that could earn them college credit.
