PHONY FAVRE AUTOGRAPHS: Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre cooperated with an FBI sting operation in Milwaukee that resulted in two men charged with selling more than 1,000 phony Favre autographs.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Biskupic said the sting operation started after authorities got a tip last year that Ron Marth, a sports memorabilia dealer from suburban Mequon, was selling phony Favre autographs.

An undercover officer gave Marth 50 photos of Favre and asked if he could get the quarterback to sign them. Marth promised to get the photos signed for $3,750, Biskupic said.

When Favre appeared at an autograph show organized by Marth in November, Marth asked Favre to sign five of the photos, but Favre declined, as arranged in advance.

Even though he didn't sign any photos, Marth returned the 50 photos to the officer with "Brett Favre 4" scrawled on them.

CHARGERS-BEARS TRADE: Defensive tackle Shawn Lee, whose performance has fallen off dramatically the last two years, was traded from the San Diego Chargers to the Chicago Bears on Monday for a fifth-round draft pick in 1999.

Lee had a career-high eight sacks in 1995, then signed a big contract. He had only one sack in 1996 and lost his starting job midway through the season. He started 15 games last season and had three sacks.

FIFA LEADERSHIP: Sepp Blatter, a last-minute candidate who waged a globe-trotting campaign, was elected president of FIFA, the first change at the top of soccer's world body in nearly 25 years.

In balloting two days before the start of the World Cup, Blatter defeated Lennart Johansson when the Swedish president of the European soccer union UEFA conceded after the first round.

Neither candidate received the two-thirds vote needed for a first-ballot victory, but Blatter had a clear majority, 111-80, and Johansson would have needed a massive defection in the second round, when a simple majority would have won.
