Ellen died peacefully, in her own bed, at home on January 4, 1999 after a two and a half year struggle with terminal
illnesses.She was born March 3, 1910, in Snowflake, Arizona, to Silas Derryfield Smith and Ellen Johanna Larson. She was the last of nine children and grew up with lots of nieces, nephews and cousins who remember "Little Ellen" and her lust for living and positive outlook on life. Ellen attended the old L.D.S. High School where she met lifelong friends, Josie Barlow Smith and Bertha Aste Millburn. She married Edgar Meears Lyon in 1929, and after 16 years had a daughter, Bonnie, then later a son, Mark. Edgar died in 1963 and Mark in 1982. She married Obed Crosby Haycock in 1964 and traveled the world with him on business trips for the University of Utah Upper Air Research. Obed died in 1983.
Ellen is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Lou Lyon Kaufman, and her grandchildren, Johanna Mae Kaufman and Bryan Derek Kaufman.
Ellen was a true homemaker and friend; a gifted seamstress and creative chef, who openly shared her home and talents with everyone.
Please join a celebration of Ellen's life at 12 noon on Saturday, January 9th at the East Millcreek 11th L.D.S. Ward Chapel, 2702 East Evergreen Avenue (3435 South). Part of the service will be open for short remarks from the congregation in tribute of Ellen's life. Friends may greet the family on Friday evening, January 8th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., prior to the service.
