The merger of Utah's 34 Q Lube vehicle service centers into the Jiffy Lube chain is nearing completion.

A spokesman for Salt Lake-based Jiffy Lube said the merger will create 50 Jiffy Lube locations throughout the state. Both Q Lube and Jiffy Lube are subsidiaries of Pennzoil-Quaker State Co., the motor oil and automotive products company formed last year when Quaker State and Pennzoil merged.

Formerly the fast-lube subsidiary of Quaker State, Salt Lake-based Q Lube is changing to Jiffy Lube as part of the new company's effort to consolidate its fast-lube operations.

"Our customers will continue to see the same . . . faces that they are used to during their visits to Q Lube," said David Neff, president of the Jiffy Lube Utah Franchise Cooperative.

"The only noticeable changes will be the bright red and white Jiffy Lube signage and the introduction of Jiffy Lube's trademark Signature Service."

The two companies are so similar, Neff said, that a smooth transition is expected.

Jiffy Lube also is adding Utah safety inspection and emission testing at 15 of its current locations. Those services can be performed during an oil change and lube job.

Utah's 50 Jiffy Lubes are owned and operated by six local franchisees.

Q Lube began as Minit-Lube in Salt Lake City in 1977. In 1985, it was bought by Quaker State and the name was changed.
