The U.S. Postal Service brings to the winner's circle a new 33-cent stamp honoring Secretariat, Triple Crown champion of 1972. The tribute is part of the Celebrate the Century series for the 1970s.
In winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes -- the first to do so in 25 years -- Secretariat established two records in the Triple Crown competitions. The Celebrate the Century commemorative stamps honor some of the most significant people, places, events and trends of each decade of the 20th century starting with the 1900s. Each decade thereafter reflected the memorable moments of that period.
Others winning 1970s accolades include: "Sesame Street," the Bicentennial, disco music, women's rights movement, Monday night football, videocassette recorders, jumbo jets, Pittsburgh Steelers and "All in the Family." Each will also appear on a 33-cent U.S. stamp.
The 1980 stamps are scheduled to be issued in January 2000. The 1990 commemoratives will be released in April 2000. The stamps from 1900 through 1960 are now available at your local post office.
First-day covers of the Secretariat stamp with the official first-day postmarks can be obtained from the U.S. Postal Service's Fulfillment Services by calling 1-800-STAMP-24.
