ALTAMONT~Ned Blaine Mitchell, age 76, died Wednesday, December 22, 1999 at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.
He was born March 12, 1923 in Upalco, Utah to Parley Grover and Marguerite Ann Knight Mitchell. He married Betty Hansen January 15, 1943; later divorced.He married Norma D. Call Jessen November 24, 1977.
Ned served in the U. S. Army during World War II, after which he returned to Altamont and worked at Calder's Creamery.
He also worked as a carpenter in the Altamont area for a time, however, not being satisfied with his skill level, he returned to trade tech to upgrade. With his increased abilities he formed his own business which flourished over 50 years, doing commercial construction, bridges, etc. and during which time he also served from 1965 - 1972 as the postmaster in Altamont. With the arrival of oil production in the area, he expanded into oil field construction as well.
Ned was an "artistic craftsman" who enjoyed building and adding artistic flavor to lighthouses, bridges, ponds, cabins, etc.
He will be remembered as an extremely kind and generous man and only he will truly know
the countless hours of equipment, time and self which he freely donated to so many and various projects.
Ned is survived by his wife, Norma, of Altamont; children, Roger B. and Anah Mitchell, Vernal, UT; Mayla Ann and Curtis Parker, Hooper, UT; Tawna K. Mitchell, Altamont, UT; Gilman N. and Sheela Mitchell, Altamont, UT; Lanis G. and Lonnie Deans, Vernal, UT; 15 grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; stepchildren, D. Mac and Cynthia Jessen, Altamont, UT; Douglas C. and Julie Jessen, Talmage, UT; Judy and Dixon Reisbeck, Layton, UT; Connie and Brent Holgate, Vernal, UT; Deborah and Larry McKee, LaPoint, UT; 22 stepgrandchildren; 21 step great-grandchildren; brother and sister, Grover Mitchell, Upalco, UT; Yoma and George Retallick, Salt Lake City, UT; and a brother-in-law, Marlow Mecham.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia; brother, MarD Mitchell; sister, Guila Mecham; and a grandson, Rory B. Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 28th at the Altamont LDS Stake Center.
Friends may call at the Hullinger-Olpin Mortuary, 457 E. 300 N., Roosevelt Monday, 6-8 p.m. and at the church Tuesday, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Altamont Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion.
