PHOENIX (AP) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is attempting to rid the marketplace of a sports dietary supplement suspected of causing the seizure that nearly killed Phoenix Suns forward Tom Gugliotta.
"It's not supposed to be out there," FDA spokeswoman Ruth Welch said.Gugliotta took a supplement containing furanone, a chemical name for gamma butyrolactone, or GBL, before suffering the seizure on Dec. 17.
Suns team physician said the supplement, which has been linked to similar incidents and even one death, is the likely cause of Gugliotta's seizure.
"We've got a most likely cause here, certainly," Dr. Richard Emerson told The Associated Press on Monday. "Certainly, it's consistent with the other reports that we have received with other people who have taken it."
